作曲者の欄には David Roback と Hope Sandoval の2人の名前が入っていて、プロデュースとミックスが Four Tet です。Four Tet は Kieran Hebden の名義で、1977年にロンドンのパトニーで生まれています。

1993年のアルバムの9曲目

原曲の「Into Dust」は、Mazzy Star が1993年10月5日に Capitol から出した『So Tonight That I Might See』の9曲目です。曲を書いてプロデュースしたのが David Roback、詞が Hope Sandoval。伴奏はアコースティック・ギターとチェロだけで、長さは5分36秒あります。

シングルにはなっていません。それでもイギリスのシングル・チャートに2度入っていて、2009年は Virgin Media の広告に使われたあとで71位、2011年に47位です。映画『Foxfire』（1996年）や、ドラマ『The O.C.』『True Detective』でも使われています。

出る前から、セットの中にあった

2024年5月5日、ブルックリンの Under the K Bridge で Four Tet が DJ をした夜の曲目が、ファンのまとめたリストに残っています。1曲目が「KH – Looking At Your Pager Edit」、2曲目が「Mazzy Star – Into Dust (Kh Edit)」。正式に出る1年と1か月あまり前です。

KH は Hebden が頭文字で使っている別の名義で、2019年に Nelly Furtado をサンプリングした「Only Human」を出しています。「Looking At Your Pager」は、3LW の2000年のシングル「No More (Baby I'ma Do Right)」を下敷きにした曲です。2022年5月に正式に出たとき、本人は、自分が作ったどの曲よりもこの曲について聞かれてきた、最高の客の前でかけてきた、と書いています。

「Into Dust (Still Falling)」も、出る前からセットでかけられていた曲として紹介されています。DJ Mag は「数年前からライブでかけていて、ファンの間で強く求められていた」と書き、XL の通販ページは「ここ数年の曲のなかで、とりわけ求められてきた1曲」としています。

最初は XL の通販だけ

2025年6月17日に配信が始まり、同時に12インチと、シルクスクリーンで刷った T シャツが XL の通販だけで売り出されました。版権の表記は「Text Records under exclusive license to XL Recordings Ltd」。Text は Hebden 自身のレーベルで、2024年のアルバム『Three』はここから出ています。

配信版は5分33秒です。12インチは45回転で、それより長い版が両面に1つずつ入っています。

ラッカー盤のカッティングは Metropolis の Matt Colton です。同じ Matt Colton がマスタリングしたパソコン音楽クラブ「wonders」は、紹介文に参照として Four Tet の名前を挙げていました。

ロンドンのレコード店 Horizons Music の頁では、同じ12インチの発売日が2025年9月5日になっています。

絵と映像は Jason Evans

YouTube の説明欄には「Video by Jason Evans」とあり、ジャケットの絵も Jason Evans です。デザインは Texas Maragh。

Jason Evans は写真家です。2013年、写真集や雑誌を出している Aperture のサイトに2人の対談が載っていて、Evans は、長く一緒に仕事をしてきたので手順が自然に決まってきた、と話したうえで、作り方をこう説明しています。

Whenever you make a new album or we start a discussion about artwork, it begins with me trying to make photographs that look like the music sounds.

同じ対談で、Hebden は「もう二度と、レコードのジャケットに文字を入れる理由が見当たらない」と話しています。
